There are many challenges to overcome when looking at bariatric seating and heavy duty seating.

The key focus being the user having and maintaining dignity respect, compassion, caring and autonomy. It is what connects us as human beings, and no-one should be treated differently.     At Backcare & Seating we have a wide range of Bariatric seating that caters for the individual in their own home or for organisations who support the needs of their staff and ensure a safe working environment.

We have Bariatric Seating that cater for a variety of environments which include:

What to look for:

  • Comfort – ensure the chair offers good support and comfort to fit larger individuals
  • Durability – ensure adequate strength and durability have been accounted for i.e. look at maximum weight capacity of the chair
  • Proper Fit – Ensure the user has adequate seat depth along with the proper contact against the back and/or neck rest
  • Manoeuvrability – if care givers are involved ensure that the chair can easily be moved and turned in the spaces available. The seating may require wheel braking casters with swivel and directional modes if too heavy to lift.
  • Safe Patient Handling – do you require assistance with transferring in and out of the chair? If so, does the chair have tilt and recline functions? Are they manually or electrically operated? Is there clearance for patient lifts?

Make sure the right chair is selected for the right job. Which is that an upright type chair is fine in the kitchen dining room area; whereas a recliner caters for relaxing with friends and family in a more casual lounge environment.

The types of seating on offer are:

  • Static Bariatric Chairs – These are standard chairs that cannot be adjusted. These chairs usually have a small to medium back with a gap between the seat and back. Sometimes have the ability to adjustable height of seat.
  • Reclining Bariatric Chairs – Reclining bariatric chairs offer a greater degree of manoeuvrability as they help reposition user which avoids putting undue pressure on problematic areas. They are often motorised to make each section easier to move and reposition. They allow the user to rise and recline and maintain independence. They also mean the user can be mobile and social without having to remain in bed.
  • Office Bariatric Seating – These chairs come with a variety of support and comfort levels to meet the heavier users without their seating looking any different from their work colleagues. The most supportive and adjustable office seating in the Bariatric range is the Orthopod HD, Orthopod Titan 250 and Orthopod Titan 300 as they can be customised to suit the user.
